Really? A Q&A Section? Yup!
Location: Grand Rapids, MI.
Occupation: Recently unemployed
Preferred genre of writing: Fantasy to be broad. Specifically, I enjoy writing medieval themed stories and currently I’m working on a supernatural story with a hint of sci-fi (the sci-fi bit was new to me). For this coming National Novel Writing Month, I’m considering writing a modern, suspense story. I am definitely not opposed to trying other genres, I see no issue with expanding my writing. Some genres I will probably never write in are: western, romance/erotica and strictly sci-fi. Why? I don’t find myself interested in the genres, whether it be books, plays, music or movies, so I think I wouldn’t be interested enough in my own story if I tried.
Writing music of choice: Sometimes silence, otherwise I listen to a lot of video game and anime original soundtracks. Lately, I’ve added Cradle of Filth to my ever-growing writing playlist! I absolutely love Cradle of Filth’s orchestrated music and find it easy to get put into a trance while listening. For the curious, some of those soundtracks include: Shadow of the Colossus, Alice: Madness Returns, Fable III, Kingdom Hearts and .hack//SIGN
Where do I get my inspiration from?
Most of my creative thinking comes from my love of in-depth story line video games, the first of which being the original Kingdom Hearts on Playstation 1. I’m a sucker for a game with a plot and characters I can connect with, better yet if the game can make me cry (Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy X…). Most of the games I play are of the fantasy genre too–surprise, surprise–so that could explain why my plots I think up are along the same lines.
I did lose my passion for writing some time back. The will to write was there but that damn little voice kept telling me that everything I wrote and would write was just not good enough. In 2009, in an attempt to find a writing group or website with prompts to push me forward, I found National Novel Writing Month! I couldn’t say no to this opportunity. NaNoWriMo was nothing short of the perfect challenge I needed to get myself moving again, and I made a ton of new friends in the three years I’ve been participating! I owe my new Muse and dedication to NaNoWriMo and its founder. Without the challenge, I never would have finished my first novel ever. Then I went onto finish a second novel the next year. Now I’m aiming to finish a third–the one that is surrounded by this blog.
When did I start writing?
Ever since I was a little girl. I remember winning a Young Author’s Award in Kindergarten, I got a T-shirt and a certificate! Heh…I still cherish that memory. My favorite classes were not just English classes but English classes where we had to write a story. While all of the other kids groaned, I ran home shouting gleefully that I got to write for fun and it was a required assignment!
Do you have kids?
No, but I did shamefully add this bit so I can talk about my cats! My husband and I have three cute little furbabies. Our oldest is Wilbur, he’s a big tuxedo rescue cat! The middle is a ginger Tabby named Shinobi, we bought him from the humane society as a kitten. Hana is our little girl, she’s a “perma-kitten” and she was the best free addition to our family!
